Whisky meets history for double celebration at Ad Gefrin
Saturday is World Whisky Day. Sunday is International Museum Day. Could there be a better weekend to be a museum and a whisky stable?
Ad Gefrin, the Anglo-Saxon Museum and Whisky Distillery in Wooler, Northumberland is making the most of its position by hosting a double celebration featuring a programme of events that blend ancient heritage and contemporary craftsmanship.
On Saturday (May 17) at 1.30pm, whisky lovers can take part in the World Whisky Day Distillers Tour. Led by Ad Gefrin’s expert distiller, the tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at the art of whisky making, culminating in a guided tasting in the Cask Viewing Gallery - where the whisky matures.
Guests will sample four distinctive whiskies: Tácnbora, Corengyst, Corenkyn, and Flýte, the distillery’s indulgent cream liqueur. Tickets are £30 per person.
On Sunday, May 18, Ad Gefrin celebrates International Museum Day with a free talk at 12:50pm from Dr Chris Ferguson, director of visitor experience.
Held in the venue’s Great Hall, the talk will explore the legacy of Northumbria’s Anglo-Saxon Golden Age and how kingship, culture, and community shaped one of Britain’s most influential historical periods.
Ad Gefrin is England’s most northerly whisky distillery and the first in Northumberland for over 200 years. For more information, visit the website.
