Twilight falls at High Force
There’s a new reason to stick around a little longer at one of County Durham’s most iconic beauty spots this summer - High Force Waterfall is staying open late.
For the first time, the circular woodland walk to the base of the falls is open until 8pm, giving visitors a chance to see the waterfall - and the surrounding Upper Teesdale countryside - in a completely different light.
“It’s truly magical,” says welcome host Ian Scanlan. “The awe-inspiring cascade of High Force Waterfall itself is truly magical, but the stunning upland landscape surrounding the waterfall is also a wonderful part of the county.”
It is thought the extended hours, which run until Sunday, September 7, will offer a quieter window to explore - whether you’re calling in after work, on a day out with the kids, or just fancy seeing a different side of the site.
“This will provide further opportunities for people to explore this beautiful nature spot and witness the drama of this area at dusk,” adds Ian.
To make the most of the holidays, there’s also a new summer saver ticket. If visitors book online, it’s £10 for two adults and two kids – with under fours free – and includes access to the site’s Bumble Bee Safari trail.
Designed to get children moving, noticing and asking questions, the trail is included with every ticket.
Tours run every Sunday at 11am, and the route is accessible via the Outdoor Mobility Tramper hire scheme. For those making a proper evening of it, the High Force Hotel is just across the road, serving up drinks, dinners and boutique rooms. There’s also space to park up your campervan overnight if you book in advance.
