A new exhibition gives a platform to women who have experienced abuse and highlights red flag behaviour which is often ignored. Tony Henderson reports
A new exhibition opening in County Durham next week (November 25) will showcase artwork created by survivors of abuse to communicate their experiences.
Red Flags: Art as a Voice, it is described as a survivor-led initiative.
The event at Consett Heart Heritage & Arts Centre will also see the launch of Victims’ Voice Durham community interest company, which will offer help and support to sufferers.
It will feature artwork created by survivors of abuse, violence, and systemic injustice to portray the red flags which it is claimed are too often ignored.
“Each piece in the exhibition is a testament to survival, courage, and the urgent need for change,” said Victims’ Voice founder Tracy Thompson, a former teacher who lives in Consett.
“This exhibition isn’t just about art - it’s about having a voice. Every brushstroke, every image, every word is a refusal to be silenced. These are not just stories - they are calls to action.
“There are so many victims and there is definitely a need out there, and we want to raise awareness and raise the profile of the problem.
“The use of art can be a cathartic way for people to work through their experiences.”
The exhibition of paintings by anonymous individuals and groups will also include a creation which reflects the experience of many victims having to “walk on eggshells” in an abusive environment.
Victims’ Voice will offer drop-in sessions, visit refuges, and run recovery programmes for sufferers as well as highlighting the warning signs of domestic abuse.
The exhibition runs from Tuesday, in line with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, over four days at the centre in the Old Ambulance Hall, John Street, Consett.
Admission is free, and opening hours will be Tuesday November 25, 11am-4pm, Wednesday, 2-5pm, Friday, 3pm-7pm, Saturday, November 29 11am-4pm.
