Sunday for Sammy sketch competition returns in search of new North East comedy writing talent
The winning sketch could go on to be performed in front of thousands at the next Sunday for Sammy Arena show
Aspiring comedy writers from across the North East are being invited to put pen to paper as Sunday for Sammy revives its Sketch for Sammy competition in search of the region’s next sitcom talent.
Open to writers of all experience levels, the competition offers entrants the chance to see their work brought to life by professional actors in front of a live audience, with the winning sketch potentially going on to be performed before thousands at the next Sunday for Sammy Arena spectacular in 2028.
The competition will culminate in the Sketch for Sammy final at The Exchange 1856 in North Shields on October 18, where six shortlisted finalists will see their five-minute sketches professionally staged during an evening of comedy and music.
Before reaching the stage, finalists will receive mentoring to help refine their scripts, with the overall winner receiving the Clement and La Frenais Comedy Award, named in honour of legendary North East writing duo Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, creators of television classics including The Likely Lads, Porridge and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.
Entries will be judged by a panel featuring comedians Cal Halbert and Kelly Rickard, producer Ray Laidlaw, comedy director Emma Roxburgh and writer Tony Gannie, with surprise guest judges also expected to help choose the winner on the night.
The competition has become an important platform for emerging comedy writers, giving them the rare opportunity to hear their work performed in front of an audience while receiving feedback and support from experienced industry professionals.
Applications are now open, with writers invited to submit an original five-minute sketch. Entries close on September 12, with the shortlist due to be announced on September 28.
Tickets for the Sketch for Sammy final at The Exchange 1856 will go on sale soon, with each shortlisted finalist receiving two complimentary tickets.
