Stories light up Durham Cathedral as Luxmuralis returns
Durham Cathedral will be glowing again this week thanks to the return of Luxmuralis.
The artistic collective known for transforming historic spaces with light and sound, brings The Storytellers, an immersive celebration of literature to the historic space from today (Wednesday) until Sunday (October 12).
Now in its fourth year, the show floods the cathedral’s towering architecture with projections of manuscripts, text and characters that slip and shimmer across the stone.
Inside, the great nave becomes a dreamscape of fairy tales, fantasy and poetry, while outside - viewed through the Cloisters - rare manuscripts from the cathedral’s own collection, including the Magna Carta, are cast in brilliant light.
Andrew Usher, chief officer: visitor experience and enterprise at Durham Cathedral, said: “The literature themed projections throughout the cathedral creates the feeling of stepping into another world.
“With such a nostalgic theme and with people spotting their favourite characters from books within the projections, we got great feedback from the preview night that The Storytellers is another fantastic experience.”
The accompanying soundscape washes through the space - part concert, part whisper - inviting visitors to slow down, reflect, and even light a candle in the Galilee Chapel before leaving.
The Storytellers runs each evening from 6.30pm-9.15pm until Sunday (October 12). Tickets (£11 adults, £4.50 children, under-threes free) are available at durhamcathedral.co.uk.
