Step into stories from the past
Beamish's Summer of Fun programme will invite visitors to explore six themed adventures across its historic streets, farms and pit village
Beamish Museum is inviting families to step into stories from the North East’s past this summer as its Summer of Fun programme returns for the school holidays.
Running from July 18 to August 31, the event will see visitors take part in six themed adventures spread across the museum’s different time periods, encouraging them to compete, collaborate, create and explore as they make their way around the award-winning open air attraction.
Activities include a Time-Travelling Transport trail highlighting the museum’s historic vehicles, the chance to experience life as a drover in the 1820s Landscape, and helping Miss Smith’s maid track down missing ingredients in the 1900s Town.
Elsewhere, visitors can explore life as an evacuee on the 1940s Farm and discover post-war Britain through the eyes of a teenager in the 1950s Town.
Connor Emerson, curator of Social History at Beamish Museum, said: “This summer we have been inspired by stories from different areas of the museum to create a series of experiences that our visitors can use to explore the museum, compete with each other, solve problems together and be creative.
“There is something for everyone to enjoy, and many reasons to use your Beamish Unlimited Pass to return again and again and get a different experience each time!”
Alongside the themed adventures, visitors will be able to take part in a host of hands-on activities including weaving workshops, mining demonstrations and suffrage rallies in the 1900s Town.
There will also be opportunities to learn about wartime life, take part in a 1950s radio-style quiz and even bring teddy bears along for a check-up at the museum’s 1950s NHS Clinic.
Horse lovers can also enjoy a carriage driving competition on July 18 and 19, while Rowley Station will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its arrival at the museum with a special commemorative event later in the summer.
Daytime events are included in museum admission and are free to Beamish Unlimited Pass holders and Friends of Beamish members.
