Sleaford Mods frontman joins radical new show at Live Theatre
A powerful new production exploring homelessness will take centre stage at Newcastle’s Live Theatre this September, featuring Sleaford Mods frontman Jason Williamson in a rare live performance.
Edgecity, a new work by North East playwright gobscure, will run for three nights from September 25-27.
Known for their “brokenword” style and radical edge, gobscure has drawn from their own lived experience of homelessness to deliver six uncompromising monologues performed by a cast of three, including the post punk outfit’s lead singer.
Titles of the monologues include Mind The Reality Gap, Die Like Chekhov, and yu cants start revolutions sitting on yr arse. The show will also feature live music from Geordie turntablist Mariam Rezaei.
Speaking about the production, gobscure, who uses plural and non-binary pronouns, said: “We've written our whole life. Only thing making sense in the circumstances is having a voice.
“To have Live Theatre and Jack McNamara recognise these narratives now and with a musician and performers we genuinely respect and admire makes us so proud.”
Williamson, whose work with Sleaford Mods has made him a defining voice of modern Britain, promises to bring a distinctive energy to the stage.
Live’s artistic director Jack McNamara, who will direct the performance, said: “We are truly stoked to welcome Jason to Live Theatre to give voice to these amazing pieces by one of the most genuinely radical North East writers I have come across...
“These are artists who, in their different ways, have glimpsed hell and know how to talk about it. But their approach is full of unexpected insights, brutal honesty and gallows humour. This endorsement of gobscure’s work really is very meaningful. Two radical voices coming together in a very special way.”
Edgecity runs from September 25-27. Tickets and further information are available at www.live.org.uk.
