Portraits of difference and belonging go on show in Bishop Auckland
Debbie Todd showcases work rooted in language, visibility and inclusion
An award-winning North East photographer is presenting her first solo show at Bishop Auckland Town Hall.
Photographer Debbie Todd brings together two bodies of work for the exhibition now open and running until May 16.
Specially commissioned for the venue, The Meaning of Being Different is displayed in the Library, exploring identity, difference and belonging.
Meanwhile Extra Ordinary is installed in the historic Strong Room, coinciding with Down Syndrome Awareness Day on March 21 and highlights disability, visibility and inclusion.
A Masters graduate of The Northern School of Art, Debbie is a socially engaged portrait photographer who collaborates with marginalised communities across the region.
Speaking about the exhibition, she said: “The work shown at Bishop Auckland is rooted in proverbs and idioms that shape perceptions of people with different conditions, identities and lifestyles.
“By pairing imagery with language, the series encourages audiences to reflect on how everyday phrases can impact individuals and communities.
“The portraits represent people often misunderstood or excluded from mainstream media, offering space for recognition, understanding and inclusion.
“This being my first solo show, I’m proud to share the work in a space that’s accessible to everyone.”
Entry is free, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm.
