North East comedy secures Radio 4 return
Production company, Candle & Bell are heading back into the studio for a second series of sitcom Tom and Lauren Are Going OOT
In a first for the region, a North East-produced radio comedy is returning for a second series.
Production company Candle & Bell’s Tom and Lauren Are Going OOT! - written and performed by Tom Machell and Lauren Pattison - will begin recording its second series this summer, following a successful debut on BBC Radio 4 in 2024.
The show’s return marks the first time an independent North East company has secured a re-commission for a radio comedy on the national broadcaster.
“I’m delighted that we’ve been trusted with a series two for Tom and Lauren,” said Lauren.
“We had so much fun writing the first series and bringing these characters to life, and it’s great to see people backing great comedy made in the North East.”
Series two will once again feature guest stars Julian Clary and Newcastle stand-up, Louise Young, with five new episodes packed with “Geordie humour, laugh out loud moments” and plenty of misadventures.
Tom added: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be back for series two! The response to series one was incredible... Lauren and I are scribbling away, and we can’t wait to share more of the chaos, mishaps, and unexpected adventures.
“Working with Lauren is so much fun, and getting the chance to make another season of this show... in the North East really is the cherry on top.”
Recording will take place at Pride Media Centre in Gateshead.
The re-commission is the latest piece of good news for Candle & Bell, which received its third BBC Small Indie Fund award earlier this year and recently appointed a new executive producer.
“We’ve never been busier,” said Maria Caruana Galizia, producer of the show and the company’s managing director.
“We’ve just completed filming a BBC Three documentary in the region and we have a number of other big projects in the pipleline. I’m delighted to be working with Tom and Lauren once again, producing the second series of this show in the North East.
“It’s such a treat to work with local talent and local voices. We can’t wait to bring you the second instalment of the misadventures of this loveable couple.”
Series two of Tom and Lauren are Going OOT will air in 2026. Series one is available now on BBC Sounds.
