Newcastle gears up for free fun times in the sunshine
Newcastle’s Quayside is transforming into a giant playground for all ages, as NE1’s Summer in the City returns with a packed lineup featuring more than 75 free events.
Whether you're into yoga, kayaking, storytelling or cake decorating, there’s a decent chance you’ll find something in the programme to get you excited.
Now a staple of the city’s summer scene, the programme has been running since 2021, offering six weeks of fun during the school holidays. And it’s all completely free.
You could find yourself doing downward dog with a view of the Millennium Bridge, trying your hand at a ukulele in a kids' music session, or joining a guided tour to uncover Newcastle’s dark medieval past.
“This year, we’ve packed the Summer in the City programme with as many different activities as possible to encourage even more people to visit Newcastle and enjoy everything the city has to offer,” says Rachel Fenwick, head of marketing and events at NE1.
“These events are designed to be inclusive, creative and fun, and a great excuse to try something new and get involved in the buzz of the city.”
There’s plenty for families too, with the much-loved Tales on the Tyne storytelling sessions every Wednesday, and the Let’s Party kids’ clubs popping up on Mondays. A teddy bear’s picnic kicks it all off on July 21, and there’s a Toon Takeover for young Newcastle United fans.
If you fancy something more adventurous, CBK Adventures is back offering free kayaking sessions along the Tyne - yes, really free. But be warned: last year’s spots were snapped up in under five days, so don’t hang about.
Bookings are open from NOW (July 1).
