A portrait of Matty Healy taken during a brief session in a Newcastle record shop has earned North East photographer Neil Ferry a place on the shortlist for the British Photography Awards.
The photograph of The 1975 frontman was taken at Beyond Vinyl, based at the John Marley Centre, during a break in rehearsals for Sunday for Sammy in February.
Matty is a patron of the North East performing arts charity and went on to headline its fundraising concerts with a memorable acoustic set.
Neil had only a short time with the singer to capture the image, which is shortlisted in the Portrait category.
Explaining the thinking behind the photograph in his awards submission, he said: “Time is often the greatest luxury in portrait photography, yet it is rarely available. This portrait of Matty Healy was created during a brief photographic sitting, demanding instinct as much as preparation.
“The final image was carefully refined to realise my vision of a timeless portrait, using light, tone and texture to create an atmosphere that feels removed from contemporary publicity photography.
“My intention was to produce an image where expression and presence take precedence over celebrity.”
It is one of three of Neil’s photographs to make the British Photography Awards shortlist.
A second image of musician Nick Celino is also in contention in the Portrait category, while he has been shortlisted in the Wedding category for a photograph of couple Georgia and Dylan on their big day.
The final results will be decided by the judging panel, but there is also a public vote, giving supporters the chance to back their favourite shortlisted photographs.
The winners will be revealed at a ceremony on November 1.
