Long live the Queens! North East comedy set for a third series
BBC Comedy has confirmed a recommission for Phil Dunning's Middlesbrough-set sitcom, Smoggie Queens
Following on from its successful second series and digital spin-off series The Dickie Show, the award-winning BBC sitcom Smoggie Queens, which is set and filmed in Middlesbrough, has been recommissioned for a third series on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three.
The series, which is produced by comedy production powerhouse, Hat Trick Productions and supported by the North East Production Fund, follows a gang of friends who are fiercely proud of their North Eastern town of Middlesbrough and their cherished pocket of the LGBTQ+ community.
It’s third instalment is promising to serve up more chaos, heart and mischief with Smoggie Queens staples Dickie (played by series writer Phil Dunning), Mam (Mark Benton), Lucinda (Alexandra Mardell), Sal (Patsy Lowe) and Stewart (Elijah Young) all signed on to return to the Boro.

Returning and additional cast are set to be announced soon, but our money is on Michelle Visage and Steph McGovern being in the mix.
Gregor Sharp, commissioning editor for the BBC, said: “The fact that Smoggie Queens is returning for a third series is testament to the brilliance of Phil Dunning and the entire creative team behind it.
“The show has carved out a unique place in British comedy with its unforgettable characters, razor-sharp humour and huge heart. The show continues to celebrate the people and spirit of Teesside with warmth, wit and authenticity, and we can’t wait to see what chaos the Smoggie Queens get themselves into next.”
Phil Dunning, writer, creator and star of the series, said: “So buzzing to be recommissioned for series 3! Thank you BBC! Going to have a cheeky Bloody Mam to celebrate.”
Chris Jones, series producer of Hat Trick Productions added: “I’m thrilled that the BBC is giving us another series. Phil and I love making this show so much, and the collaboration, care and creativity that every department brings to it is truly special. I can’t wait for us all to get back to the Boro and make another mad series!”
Series one and two of Smoggie Queens and The Dickie Show are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
