Hopetown Darlington has been awarded full Museum Accreditation less than three years after opening.
The accreditation, administered by Arts Council England on behalf of the UK Accreditation Partnership, is the industry standard for museums and galleries and follows a detailed assessment of the railway heritage attraction.
It confirms Hopetown meets nationally agreed standards covering how it is run, cares for its collections and engages with the public.
Hopetown opened in July 2024 and has since welcomed more than 410,000 visitors. Its nationally significant railway heritage collection comprises more than 30,000 objects and records.
Emmie Kell, director museums and cultural property at Arts Council England, said: “We’re delighted that Hopetown Darlington has been successful in gaining their accreditation status.
“This means that their Collections will be looked after and maintained offering inspiration, enjoyment and learning for the local community and visitors to enjoy now and in the future.”
The award is also significant for Hopetown’s future development, opening up further funding opportunities and allowing it to host touring exhibitions, as well as providing access to professional advice and support for its collection.
Councillor Libby McCollom, Darlington Borough Council cabinet member for local services, said the accreditation was recognition of the work of the Hopetown team and added: “It is a significant moment for the town and further strengthens Darlington’s reputation as a destination of national importance for cultural heritage and tourism.”
