Gosforth Civic Theatre prepares for a season of stories, songs and sparkle
This year’s Christmas line-up balances festive tradition with modern comedy and community spirit
Known for bringing creativity and community together, Gosforth Civic Theatre is turning up the Christmas spirit this year with a line-up of performances and events designed to entertain everyone.
With fewer than 100 days until the big day (apologies), tickets are being snapped up for a roster that is promising to be both magical and magnificently messy.
Headline events Storytime with Santa, A Town Called Christmas and A Proper Merry Christmess are joined by a host of festive favourites, live performances and film screenings designed to spread some much-needed cheer.
Families can step into a winter wonderland every weekend in December for Storytime with Santa, where Father Christmas will share a classic tale, chat about what Christmas means to his young visitors and send each child home with a special gift.
From December 19–21 , A Town Called Christmas, presented by Gala Durham and Wrongsemble, follows Clementine as she arrives in the ruins of the once-magical town of Christmas. Teaming up with a grumpy caretaker and a glitching robot, she sets out to bring back the sparkle.
There’s grown-up comedy, too, when Red Ladder Theatre Company brings A Proper Merry Christmess to the stage on December 20, offering a funny and chaotic look at the highs and lows of the festive season.
Traditionalists can enjoy Adam Z Robinson’s solo retelling of A Christmas Carol on December 8, while film fans can cosy up on December 22 for back-to-back screenings of Arthur Christmas, Home Alone and Elf for £6.
Meanwhile music lovers can start the celebrations early with The Voices of Virtue Gospel Choir’s Festive Party on December 6 – an uplifting night of gospel and soul guaranteed to get everyone singing along.
Scott Forbes, marketing and programming manager at the Theatre, said: “We’re really excited by this year’s Christmas programme. We wanted to build on the success of last year, which saw record numbers attend our festive events, including our first ever Storytime with Santa.

“We can’t wait for visitors to enjoy even more excellent performances at Gosforth Civic Theatre this year, featuring a varied programme for all the family on top of our headline family show, A Town Called Christmas – and the return of St. Nick himself!
“With people across the region facing a cost-of-living crisis, we have again made it our mission to keep prices affordable, meaning you and the family can see Santa, enjoy our Christmas show and take in a festive film for less than going to the average Panto.”
