A costume specialist who trained in the North East has been sharing the behind-the-scenes story of working on the latest big-screen adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.
Alison Lyons, who studied costume construction at what was then Cleveland College of Art and Design, now The Northern School of Art, worked closely with the film’s stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and George MacKay during the 10-week shoot.
Having previously worked on productions including Downton Abbey and Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Alison secured the job after approaching costume designer Grace Snell.
“I had found out the film was starting production. I reached out to Grace Snell, the film’s designer, and she offered me a place within her team. I feel very lucky to have worked with such a fantastic designer.”
Alison initially worked as costume co-ordinator during preparations before moving into the role of Principal Truck Supervisor when filming began.
The latter involved supervising the team responsible for the principal cast’s costumes, planning what would be needed for forthcoming scenes and ensuring everything was maintained throughout production.
It also meant plenty of hands-on work with the actors.
“One of the things I love most about period drama is that you have to physically dress someone, whether that’s lacing them into a corset or helping them tie a great bow!”
Filming took place across Devon, Dorset, Oxfordshire, Kent and Hertfordshire, with London locations including Horse Guards Parade and the National Gallery.
“I have always thought the best part of my job is being able to visit the locations. I have been lucky enough to shoot in some beautiful places, and shooting this film through the summer in locations such as Dartmoor was certainly stunning.”
Alison’s involvement also led to an unexpected opportunity when she was invited to assist with a Vogue photoshoot featuring the film’s stars.

Working alongside Grace Snell, she helped incorporate pieces from the production’s costumes into designer outfits for the magazine.
“I have never been on a set like that. The photographer, Szilveszter Mako, was so fantastic and it was incredibly collaborative.”
Ian Bowden, lecturer in Costume for Stage & Screen at The Northern School of Art in Hartlepool, welcomed her success.
“Since graduating, it has been fantastic to see Alison go on to build a successful career within the costume industry.”
The new Sense and Sensibility adaptation made its UK debut on September 25.
