Field Music honoured on Sunderland’s Music Wall of Fame
Acclaimed band celebrated with new mural at The Fire Station marking 20 years since debut album
Field Music have been announced as the latest inductees into Sunderland’s Music Wall of Fame, joining the ranks of the city’s most influential and celebrated musical talents.
A mural depicting the band’s original line-up – brothers Peter and David Brewis with drummer Andrew Moore – was unveiled at The Fire Station ahead of the group’s sold-out 20th anniversary performance last night (November 14), marking two decades since the release of their acclaimed self-titled debut album.
Formed in Sunderland in the early 2000s, Field Music have become one of the UK’s most inventive and enduring bands, releasing a string of critically acclaimed albums, earning a Mercury Prize nomination, and working across film, theatre and ballet.
The Brewis brothers have also been active mentors in the region’s creative community, nurturing new musicians through education projects and their Sunderland studio.
The new mural, created by local artist Kathryn Robertson, is located outside The Fire Station in the heart of Sunderland’s Cultural Quarter. It was commissioned by Sunderland Music City and Culture Quarter to celebrate artists who have helped shape and elevate the city’s cultural identity.
Speaking at the unveiling, Andrew Dipper, marketing director at Culture Quarter, said:
“In September we launched the Sunderland Music Wall of Fame to celebrate and spotlight Sunderland’s musical heritage.
“Dave Stewart was our first inductee – someone who has exported his music globally with Eurythmics and as a solo artist, but is a proud Mackem and tries to give back to Sunderland whenever he’s here.
“Today’s inductees fit that mould too – they’re proud to be from Sunderland and have given so much to enrich Sunderland’s creative fabric. Field Music have given so much back to the city through their music, their teaching, community projects and their studio, and we’re delighted to play a part in commemorating 20 years of this amazing band.”
The Sunderland Music Wall of Fame will continue to grow, with future inductees joining Field Music and Dave Stewart as new murals are added.
