Digging into Cambois' Hidden Depths
A two-day arts and heritage project, which kicks off today is promising to "bring Northumberland history to life". November Club CEO, Joe Hufton tells us more.
The history and ‘hidden depths’ of Cambois will be explored in any number of artistic ways today and tomorrow as the creative culmination of a long-running community project comes to pass on the Northumberland coast.
Led by performing arts charity November Club in partnership with local community venue The Tute, the free festival Cambois Hidden Depths serves up celebrations of the village’s rich heritage via mediums including dance, art, theatre, photography, storytelling and film.
November Club CEO and award-winning theatre director Joe Hufton answers a few questions, showcasing why he thinks this is such a special opportunity for visitors to celebrate the area’s fascinating heritage.
Can you tell us a bit about Cambois Hidden Depths and the showcase event this weekend?
This is a project that's been running for nearly a year that sees its culmination this weekend in a free festival.
Across the community, there will be a series of performances, theatre pieces, film, projections and historic photographs throughout both evenings, and visitors can drop into any and all of it.
The project is a really exciting partnership between professional artists, historians, archeologists and the Cambois community. It has proved that there's so much creativity in this part of the county, and I'm proud of the way that it's come together.
Why is this part of Northumberland so special to locals?
This part of Northumberland is really special to everybody including locals. It's very beautiful, but also with a very long and rich history - a history that takes in everything from Bronze Age history through to, of course, the history that people know about with mining.
Cambois is also heading towards a bright future with some really high tech industry investing in the local area. All this innovation takes place against the backdrop of some of the region’s most stunning beaches.
We're celebrating all of it in Cambois Hidden Depths and The Tute and November Club have been working really, really hard, and we're really excited for visitors to see it.
What can visitors expect from the showcase event?
Visitors can expect a real variety of things - there’s something for everybody. Whether you're interested in projection, dance, photography, or storytelling, there's something for you.
There are really cool immersive theatre pieces that happen in different places - one on a set of headphones. There are also these incredible historic photographs taken and sourced by locals, as well as films, dance and light projections.
There's a whole evening's worth of exhibitions and installations to enjoy, in both indoor venues and outdoor venues. We’ve got volunteers handing out maps so don't worry about finding your way around, head to Cambois on Friday or Saturday night and we'll make sure you get to the right place.
Just turn up with an open mind (and probably a raincoat - just in case!) and make sure you see everything there is to see. If you love Northumberland, or you're interested in this area's history, then this is definitely something for you.
Cambois Hidden Depths takes place today (September 27) and tomorrow at various venues around Cambois, Northumberland from 6pm. All performances, screenings etc are free and there’s no need to book. For full programme details, visit the website.
