Bishop Auckland library at the heart of new cultural hub

Construction has officially begun on a new combined leisure centre and library in Bishop Auckland.
Durham County Council marked the start of building with a ground-breaking ceremony, celebrating what will be a landmark addition to the town. The project will bring together sport, wellbeing and culture under one roof.
At its heart will be a fully integrated library space, offering access not only to books but also to study facilities, digital resources and community activities.
With Woodhouse Close Library now demolished, a temporary click-and-collect service is operating at the nearby leisure centre, while full library services remain available at Bishop Auckland Town Hall, Shildon and Coundon.
Cllr Joe Quinn, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for resources, investment and assets, said: “We’re delighted to be moving forward with the new leisure centre and library for Bishop Auckland, with the project entering its next phase of development and work officially starting on the new building.
“This project is being delivered as part of our Leisure Transformation Programme through which we have been creating modern and accessible facilities across our towns to encourage more residents to engage with leisure activities and live healthier lives. The new centre also supports our wider ambition to build better communities and thriving towns through the provision of up-to-date facilities.”
Alongside the library, the building will include two accessible swimming pools, a state-of-the-art gym, exercise studios, a Move Hub, sauna and steam room, soft play and a café.
Funded by Durham County Council with a £2.75m contribution from Sport England, the centre is due for completion in 2027.
