Backing Sunderland’s next generation of creatives
Bursary returns with funding to help young people turn ambition into reality
A bursary scheme designed to support the next generation of creatives in Sunderland has reopened for applications, offering vital funding to young people facing barriers to pursuing the arts.
Delivered through Culture Start, led by Sunderland Culture, the Ignite Bursary Programme provides grants of up to £500 to help young people develop their creative ambitions. Now in its third round, the scheme is open to applicants aged 12–18, or up to 25 for those with special educational needs and disabilities.
Culture Start producer Lucy Rees Harris said: “We’re delighted to launch the third round of our Ignite Bursary scheme and excited to support the future of our young creatives in Sunderland.
“The Ignite Bursary is a wonderful opportunity to kickstart that journey. You can apply for up to £500 to fund anything from equipment and supplies to tickets for shows and gigs - whatever you need to develop your skills and get that helping hand.
“By providing practical, financial support, we’re sending a clear message to our young people: we believe in you and your creative potential.”
Previous recipients have already seen tangible benefits. Sixteen-year-old Vincent Wilson said: “It was brilliant when I got the Ignite Bursary. I can access anything music wise a lot easier now. I can get what I need instead of what I can afford. I’ve been able to pay for a really good amp and guitar lessons. The grants help young people be who they want to be.”
Ellie Brown, a former Sunderland College student, added: “I successfully applied for a bursary to purchase video equipment, instead of having to loan equipment from the college. This has given me much more freedom. It was well worth it as I got money to invest in myself and my career.”
Backed by the Gillian Dickinson Trust and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the programme continues to build on its early success, supporting young creatives across the city to take their next steps.
The deadline for applications, which can be made here, close on Thursday, May 7.
