Auction to get into the groove
A collector’s huge 15,000 vinyl records collection spanning decades and genres is to be sold on Tyneside. Tony Henderson takes a spin around what's on offer.
A Tyneside music devotee’s lifelong collection of 15,000 vinyl records - many of them rare - are to feature in a 500-lot auction.
The collection spans many genres and eras, from original pressings of rare Reggae music, through 70’s punk, 80’s electronica, 90’s hip-hop, dub, techno and indie-rock, through to modern doom-metal, trip-hop, soul, folk, ambient, experimental and dubstep, industrial heavy metal… with many others in-between including classic rock, folk, funk and jazz.
Almost half of the collection of LPs are still sealed and unopened.
The collection has been assembled by a now retired university professor, and is expected to make between £50-£80k at the Anderson & Garland sale on September 24-25.
Highlights include rare limited edition box sets, including a 17 LP box set, restricted to 400 hand-numbered copies, by Newcastle-Based ambient band Zoviet France.
Also on offer will be Dubstep 12” singles, Afro-Funk from Nigeria, Trip-Hop band Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky and Bjork, as well as more big names such as Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Oasis, Gorillaz, Sonic Youth, Bob Marley, The Beatles, Primal Scream, Miles Davis, Brian Eno, Joe Strummer and many others.
As well as the records, which include record store Day Exclusives, LPs on coloured and decorative vinyl, there are books, CDs and other memorabilia too.
While many discs will be sold as individual LPs and artist bundles, the sale will offer mixed bundles of five, 10, 20 and 40 LPs and 12” singles, featuring mixed artists and sought-after compilations in specific genres from all over the world.
“This is an amazing opportunity for people to add to their own collections, stock record shops, or just invest in rare records, many of which were created in such low numbers they very rarely come to auction, especially still factory sealed in mint condition,” said Anderson & Garland music specialist, Adam Barr.

“This is a huge collection for one individual and it is brilliant that around half are in sealed condition.”
Newcastle’s Zoviet France participated in the early 1980s underground tape scene, with packaging of their releases often unconventional, involving materials such as hessian, tar paper and aluminium foil.
The band provided the music for the 2015 movie Savageland, a ‘mockumentary’ that depicts the aftermath of a massacre on a US-Mexico border town, which leaves every citizen dead except for an amateur photographer who is accused of committing it.
